As a car's horsepower and torque are increased, weak links will make themselves known- usually at the most inopportune times (Like maybe the last pass of the finals!)
An inferior input shaft will twist, crack, and spit splines, and obviously, you'll want to upgrade.
Continue to push the envelope for lower ET's and more mph, though, and you'll find the weak link has moved, because if the shaft will no longer give way, than the forward drum that it turns will.
Casting holes in all oem forward drums, and the very material that many were made from, allow this component to distort, spread, strip, and crack.

Identify the correct input shaft for your Ford C-4:
•1964 - 1969: 24 SPLINE TRANS / 24 SPLINE CONVERTER
•1970: 26 SPLINE TRANS / 26 SPLINE CONVERTER
•1971 -1986: 24 SPLINE TRANS / 26 SPLINE CONVERTER
Almost all performance oriented C-4s use the 71-86 24/26 input shaft.
This is due to the material used to make the stock shaft is better quality and stronger than the previous years.

To see if you have a usable drum to send in, remove the clutches and the piston, then tap the rim of the drum with a screwdriver.
It should ring like a bell. If it doesn't we can't fill it.
